Bilbao BBK Live: a cultural and social project

The first edition of Herrian will be held in the towns of Lekeitio and Mungia on June 3 and 10 respectively. The intention is to energise these town’s streets and bring culture to places that don’t have easy access to it and that offer less cultural content.

Bilbao BBK Live has established itself as one of the most outstanding cultural projects in Europe. The festival seeks to enrich the city’s cultural offering and to be a cultural and social tool that adds value to Bilbao, and now, also to greater Biscay. That is why today BBK and Fundación Industrias Creativas [a Creative Industries Foundation in the Basque Country] are presenting activities which will run parallel to the festival. The new standout activity this year is Herrian.

Bilbao BBK Live was born in Kobetamendi in 2006 and has been establishing and defining itself as one of the great qualitative projects in Europe. Since 2011, Bereziak has been boosting the city centre by bringing the spirit of the festival and the live music experience to the public. Six years later Hirian was born, with the aim of bringing interesting artistic offerings to the Biscayan capital’s neighbourhoods: Bilbao La Vieja, Deusto, Santutxu and this edition, Basurto. This year, because of the evolution of the festival, which goes beyond cultural and social barriers, the festival is expanding its horizons with Herrian which adds value and connects municipalities throughout Biscay.

The first edition of Herrian, is born from the union of BBK and Fundación Industrias Creativas, which together alongside Bilbao BBK Live maintain their unwavering commitment to music, culture, and diversity. This social project is established with the aim of creating a unique experience that goes beyond festival limits and becomes a catalyst for social change and cultural enrichment, adding value to citizen’s lives and giving them free access. Herrian also aims to spread music beyond the borders of Bilbao and will do so on June 3 and 10 in Lekeitio and Mungia by bringing an enriching cultural offering to places that are often limited in their access to cultural events in the capital.

BBK Managing Director Gorka Martínez regarding Herrian says: “This year, we want to take things one step further and go beyond the capital to bring the essence of Bilbao BBK Live to our villages. And we are going to do just that with Herrian: a travelling festival that aims to visit different municipalities in Biscay, and to bring culture through music to the citizenry. With this initiative we want to support current musical proposals and local talent. We want it to be a framework to raise awareness about the diversity of Biscayan society, while also seeking to value the use of the Basque language as well as gender identity. And all this happens within the framework of an accessible and sustainable event which has room for 0 Km workshops and gastronomy offerings that are organized in close collaboration with local players.”

HIRIAN AT BASURTO

For one day Hirian will turn the streets and squares of the emblematic Basurto district into a concrete party with a diverse and avant-garde programming. On Saturday, June 17 for 10 hours, 23 artists will grace the four stages distributed throughout the neighbourhood.

BEREZIAK, the festival comes down to town

Bereziak will continue to be the open access event that brings the spirit of Bilbao BBK Live to the city and promotes dialogue between citizens and major cultural events. This way, the local public will be able to enjoy interesting and exclusive artistic offerings that are often not part of the festival’s lineup.

The doors of the 16th edition open on Thursday, 6 July, when the British band Florence + The Machine will once again set foot on Basque soil. FRIDAY 7 JULY

PAVEMENT, PHOENIX, RÓISÍN MURPHY, DANIEL AVERY, THE BLAZE, JAMIE XX, DUKI

On Friday, 7 July, the lineup will be topped by Pavement, the iconic leading band of the 90s on their return onstage with a single date in Spain in 2023. With 3 of their first albums among the 500 best albums ever according to Rolling Stones. The U.S. band and the French Phoenix will take the audience back in time as they revisit their greatest indie hits of the 90s and 2000s. In their live session, the multifaceted Róisín Murphy and the British techno lead Daniel Avery will join the previously announced The Blaze, Jamie xx y Duki. Nanpa Básico will provide the rap sounds hailing directly from Medellín. The German rock band Bilbao, The Murder Capital, and Tinariwen complete the journey through the sound map of the festival’s second day.

In terms of national talent, the Madrid rock band Morgan, the brazenness and self-assurance of La Élite, the folklore of Baiuca, and the Montgrí guitar sounds of Cala Vento will join the urban artists of the lineup with Albany as headliner accompanied by the flamenco sounds of La Plazuela, the melodic rap of Dudi and the hyper pop of Maria Escarmiento. Dadabe and Rüdiger will represent Bilbao’s talent.

SATURDAY 8 JULY

ARCTIC MONKEYS, IDLES, RÖYKSOPP, LOVE OF LESBIAN, 070 SHAKE.

The festival will be wrapped by Arctic Monkeys and key exponents of the lineup, such as Idles, Röyksopp, Love of lesbian, and 070 Shake. Perfume Genius, the king of art-pop, will also perform, as will the multifaceted and multicultural Young Fathers, the Argentinian trap of Neo Pistea, and the South Korean-American cyborg Miss Grit. Guitars play a big part in the final day with bands like La Paloma and Menta from Madrid and the previously announced The Lathums, Arde Bogotá, and Merina Gris. The urban scene will be represented by the delicateness of Judeline, the sound fusion and powerful live performance of Hofe x 4:40, and Rojuu and Ben Yart rounding out the urban lineup for Saturday. Eneritz Furyak will provide the post-folk sound from Irún.

BASOA

THE ELECTRONIC FOREST, TEMPLE OF ESCAPISM

The electronic lineup of Basoa is completed with the announcement of three of the most promising names in the electronic scene in Spain: Toccororo, Sama Yax, and Dalila. The sum of these three national DJs rounds out the 15 names of this edition’s lineup and one that is both eclectic and compact, avant-garde and purist. With Anz, Call Super, HAAi, Sama Yax, and Violet on Thursday; Ben Ufo, Sherelle, Job Jobse, Dinamarca, and Dalila on Friday and Young Marco, Avalon Emerson, John Talabot, GAZZI, and Toccororo on Saturday. It will again become a temple of escapism where the current gurus of the electronic scene will emerge, a forest that will become Europe’s most distinguished dance floor.

LASAI

MUSIC INNOVATION WITH THE BEST VIEWS OF BILBAO

Lasai arose to not exceed 100 beats per minute and has become the key stage to put the brakes on and leave room for the masters of slow tempos and high intensities. On the opening day, the stage will be inundated by the avant-garde sounds of  DJ Der, Formica, Olivia, Phoebe, and Xamana Jones. GAZZI will curate the stage on Friday, introducing 8kitoo, Malibu, Ouri, Senda Fatal, and Tenguerengue. Saturday’s curator will be Dinamarca including Fantasilandia, Ghazal, Kebra, Linnéa, and Sukumons on the lineup.

The sixteenth edition of Bilbao BBK Live has a lineup designed for the audience to savor every performance, allowing enough time to make the most of each moment, every sound, and every live performance in an unmatched location, making Bilbao BBK Live an exceptional experience.

AN EUSKO LABEL LINEUP

This announcement reveals a new image from the Supereuskadi photo essay by artist Vicente Paredes, esku pilota, which adds to the previously disclosed images, the harri-jasotzailes (stone lifters) and the legend of Tximistarri (lightning stone). Because at Bilbao BBK Live, art in all forms is as fundamental as music, as they share a common goal of revealing the identity and idiosyncrasy of the Basque country.

WE SOW AWARENESS AND OXYGEN

The festival organizers uphold their commitment to caring for natural environments. They will donate €3 for every ticket sold to the reforestation of the wooded land affected by the Balmaseda forest fire in November. The Enkarterri district is considered the ecological lung of Biscay.

Passes are still available on the festival’s tickets section and seetickets.com/es, with the convenience of purchasing in installments and booking camping access. Day tickets are available starting Thursday, 9 March, at a special price of €70.

Bilbao BBK Live adds Phoenix, Fever Ray, Jamie xx, Duki, M83, Röyksopp and IDLES to the 2023 lineup

HAAi, Amaia, Dry Cleaning, Anz, Sherelle, GAZZI, and more artists also join this second round of festival confirmations

The sixteenth edition of the festival will be held on July 6, 7, and 8, 2023 at Kobetamendi

In this second batch of confirmations, the visual identity of the festival continues to star the snapshots of Supereuskadi, the photographic essay of the artist Vicente Paredes, this time with the legend of Tximistarri as the protagonist

Tximistarri; basque word composed of Tximista=Bold and Harri=Stone
ACCORDING TO TRADITION, ON JUNE 13—THE DAY OF ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA—TXIMISTARRI, THIS LARGE ROCK, MUST BE CIRCLED SEVEN TIMES. IN RETURN, THE SAINTLY DEFENDER OF LOST CAUSES GUARANTEES THAT THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING WILL FIND A MATE.

The legend continues. The artists of the next edition of Bilbao BBK Live 2023, to be held next July 6, 7, and 8 in Kobetamendi continue to be revealed. And in the same way, the images that will accompany the graphic image of this sixteenth edition of the festival are being unveiled. As artists of the stature of Arctic Monkeys, Florence + The Machine, The Chemical Brothers, and The Blaze already head the lineup, a new batch of artists are arriving in early-Christmas-gift form to complete the already formidable 2023 list.

The emblematic French pop of Phoenix; the eclecticism of the former half of The Knife with his solo project Fever Ray; the big brother of Argentine trap Duki; the instrumental and electronic M83; the ethical and political punk rock of IDLES; the brilliant Nordic electronica of Röyksopp; and the digger and member of The xx Jamie xx headline this second round of artists. Two bastions of post-punk in its place of origin join the line-up: Dry Cleaning from London and Ireland’s The Murder Capital. The national talent is represented by the multifaceted and angelic voice of Amaia; the Montgrí guitars of Cala Vento; and the wildest punk energy of La Élite. While the electronic cast of Basoa expands with the addition of names like Anz, Avalon Emerson, HAAi, Sherelle, GAZZI, and John Talabot.

At Bilbao BBK Live art in all its forms is as fundamental as its poster—and we are coming from an image as powerful as that of los harrijasotzailes. Now the poster stars the legend of Tximistarri, this being the fourth image that reveals the festival as part of the art-music alliance between artist Vicente Paredes and Bilbao BBK Live, with the common goal of showing the identity and idiosyncrasy of Euskadi.

The Organization of the festival, always committed to the care of natural areas, will allocate €3 from each pass sold to the reforestation of the area affected by the fires in the town of Balmaseda, in Enkarterri, the lungs of Bizkaia.

Passes are still on sale at the tickets page and seetickets.com, with the possibility of paying in installments and purchasing passes with camping included.

Bilbao BBK Live: Florence + The Machine, The Chemical Brothers, The Blaze, and many more on its 2023 edition

The Lathums, 070 Shake, Tinariwen, Love of Lesbian, Rojuu, Ben Yart, Albany, Delaporte, and more artists join the previously announced Arctic Monkeys

Like every year, the festival will be held in Kobetamendi, and this year will take place from July 6 to 8, 2023

The graphic image of the 16th edition of the festival features snapshots from Supereuskadi, the photographic essay from the artist Vicente Paredes

Harrijasotzaile
A Basque word composed of Harri: stone and Jaso: to elevate

Through the photography of the harrijasotzailes Ousmane Dramé and Garazi Arruti, part of the work Supereuskadi by Vicente Paredes, Bilbao BBK Live presents the first names on the lineup of its sixteenth edition. Arctic Monkeys were recently announced as the first headliner of the festival, and today, 24 more names are added to the lineup including, Florence + The Machine, The Chemical Brothers and The Blaze as part of the frontlines of Bilbao BBK Live 2023, to be held July 6, 7, and 8, 2023 at Kobetamendi.

First artists confirmed for Bilbao BBK Live 2023

It has been four years since Florence Welch passed through Bilbao BBK Live, and repeating that unforgettable moment is essential to further enhance our adoration for Florence + The Machine. With their new album, Dance Fever, and their timeless hits, they will once again make history on Basque soil. The Blaze and The Chemical Brothers left their mark on the festival, and that is why it was necessary to feel their electronic hits in the heart of Kobetamendi, as well as enjoy their atmospheric and bewitching live performances once again.

Every Bilbao BBK Live lineup is a sonorous exploration of the different musical styles of our planet. The folk sounds of the Manchester quartet The Lathums complete the British cast in this first batch of names. The hip hop of the future is 070 Shake, and the group from New Jersey will bring their irrefutable Double Sided: Indie to Kobetamendi with energy and overflowing personality in a show that will be unforgettable. There is always room for exotic sounds in the festival, and in this edition they will be represented by the African Tuareg group Tinariwen and their desert and electrifying sounds.

This journey through the different styles and origins of the artists on the lineup cannot continue without the obligatory stop at the national scene led by Santi Balmes’ band Love of Lesbian, or with special emphasis on the already solid urban scene, which will have an important representation on the festival’s schedule with the most brazen Navarrese Ben Yart, the queen of the cutest sad trap Albany and the teenage emo trap idol Rojuu. Of course, there will be an important electro-pop presence with Delaporte and Playback Maracas, traditional and electronic sounds with Baiuca, the Murcian rock of Arde Bogotá, and the boyband Colectivo Da Silva.

Basque-label artists are part of the festival’s DNA, and to that end, the avant-garde and representatives of Basque synth pop Merina Gris and the current benchmark of Basque urban pop Bengo could not be missing as part of the first names that make up the 2023 lineup.

It wouldn’t be Bilbao BBK Live without electronic sounds. If the festival wasn’t already known worldwide for its legendary space dedicated to Basoa dance music, it would be known for the DJs and producers that complete its program each year. Young Marco, Job Jobse, Ben Ufo, Dinamarca, Call Super, Violet and many more will fill both the festival’s forest and the official dance floor with the most cutting-edge sounds.

Supereuskadi, union between art and music

At Bilbao BBK Live, art in all its forms is as fundamental as the lineup. That’s why this year’s poster features the photographic essay by Vicente Paredes from Alicante, in an art-music alliance that is habitual of the festival. Supereuskadi shows a journey through the culture and society of this land via the eyes of the photographer.

The festival and the artist come together in this edition with the common goal of showing the identity and idiosyncrasy of Euskadi. The artist does this through his snapshots and as he himself says, “The festival is an alternative platform to give visibility to the project and reach many more people, especially the national and international public.”

The festival brings its main value to the forefront—the territory that has hosted this musical event for more than 15 years—thus expanding the experience of the public, since Bilbao BBK Live is much more than music. The festival is an experience where any artistic expression is welcome, and this time it does so in the form of photography, sharing the limelight with the bands that make up the lineup.

Bilbao BBK Live, an award-winning festival

The 2023 edition is presented as the must-attend event in this summer’s festival circuit, and we’re not the only ones who thing so—Bilbao BBK Live has recently been awarded with two Premios Fest awards:  Best Large Format Festival’ and ‘Best Camping Area’.

Sowing awareness and oxygen

The Organization of the festival pays special attention to current affairs and is committed to the care of natural areas, especially being the enclosure that hosts a fundamental part of the event. They strive to emphasize the importance of raising awareness about climate change and the urgency of caring for the natural environment in which we live. To that end, and as it was already done with both sales and presales in late October, the Organization has committed to allocate €3 of each ticket sold to the reforestation of the area burned in Balmaseda, Enkarterri—the lungs of Bizkaia—to contribute their part to the affected area.

Tickets are still on sale on this page and at See Tickets, with the possibility of paying in installments and purchasing camping passes.

Arctic Monkeys, first artist confirmed for Bilbao BBK Live 2023

The festival will be held on the 6th, 7th and 8th of July 2023 in Kobetamendi with the Sheffield band headlining the line-up with their newly released album The Car

Previous festival-goers can now purchase their tickets at a special price, with general on-sale starting on Wednesday 2 November.

Bilbao BBK Live begins its particular roadtrip with the line-up that will make up the sixteenth edition of the festival; first stop is Arctic Monkeys and the long-awaited presentation of its recently released seventh studio album The Car, in addition to their well-known hits, and this being their only festival date in Spain next year. If last Friday we were already giving some clues about the headliners, today we can confirm that the rumors are true: Arctic Monkeys is the first confirmed artist for the 2023 edition of Bilbao BBK Live, that will be held on July 6th, 7th and 8th in its usual and iconic location: Kobetamendi.

If the 2022 edition of the festival was a hit, the 2023 edition will be even more epic. In an unmissable event at the beginning of July, music and festival lovers from around the world will make their own pit stop in Bilbao, where more big names in music will take the stage. Bilbao BBK Live’s journey has already been running on all cylinders for a while. In fact, at last night’s Premios Fest award gala, under the framework of BIME, Bilbao BBK Live was recognized with the “Best Large Festival” and “Best Camping” awards, These awards only strengthen our mission to keep improving one of our longest-standing and most-appreciated projects, and to make the 2023 edition of Bilbao BBK Live one for the record books.

But the Bilbao BBK Live journey has just begun—we still have some road to cover. The festival also wants to thank those who have been to past editions of Bilbao BBK Live. So, from today until November 1st, you will be able to buy your 2023 tickets at a special price if you have been to the festival in the past. Head to the festival website or seetickets.com/es. If this is your first time going to Bilbao BBK Live, you will be able to buy your tickets starting November 2nd at 10 a.m. (CET).

The Organization of the festival, always aware of current events and committed to taking care of the  natural landscape since its first edition, today wants to bring attention and raise awareness about climate change and the importance of caring for the natural environment and for our land in the face of the fires that are still active today and that are affecting over 500 hectares, mainly in Balmaseda, in Enkarterri, known as the lung of Bizkaia. In this sense, it undertakes to allocate €3 of each ticket sold to the reforestation of this area.
